Sober Island Resort declared open
SLN’s newest holiday venture, The Sober Island Resort, which is located on the scenic island in Trincomalee, was declared open by Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake on 18th September 2012. Commander Eastern Naval Area Rear Admiral Jayanath Colombage and senior naval officers were also present on the occasion.
The resort’s official web site was also ceremonially launched to coincide with the event. Visitors can access the site by logging on to http://soberisland.navy.lk
The resort is endowed with a beautiful tropical beach and an alluring jungle surrounding. The island is home to an exciting array of artifacts which date back to many decades. It would be an ideal and unique holiday resort for individuals as well as corporate clients.
Guests can enjoy the luxurious accommodation which comes along with a World War II vintage bar and restaurant. Plenty of opportunities are available for hiking, sea bathing, diving, snorkeling, adventure sports, kayaking, angling, sailing, high speed boating and camping. For others, they can simply enjoy the quiet hide-out amidst the alluring jungle surroundins whilst listening to the soothing tunes of various birds. A small cricket pitch built by the British in the early 19th century and the tennis court are also available for guests to reflex their muscles.
The resort’s venue, the historic Sober Island, is known for its natural beauty. It had been a major transit camp between Europe, Far East and South East Asia during the time of the British rule in Sri Lanka. The island was first occupied by "Admiral Jacob Blaquet de la Haye" in 1672 and subsequently, by "Admiral Suffren" in 1782. The British took over the island after the Treaty of Paris in 1784 and later developed it for their military requirements. The 175-acre island located at an elevation of nearly 200 meters from the sea level was called “Isle du Soleit” by the French meaning “Island of Sun” which was developed by Sri Lanka Navy as per the two site plans drawn in 1919 and 1922. There are French graves, World War II gun positions, underground ammunition storage complexes and many ruins from the British time which can be seen even today.
